CHAPTER SEVEN

Well, shit.

That was the only thought that cut through Wren’s mind as she watched the chaos unfold around her. The four Oberon clan leaders were making a beeline toward her, and she sensed their magic sizzling in the air. She had no idea what her brother and cousins were doing outside the ballroom, but she knew she was in trouble. Hell, forget about trouble—she was in deep shit.

With her mouth hanging open, she just watched as the Oberon men rushed to her side, that electric feeling of magic being cast making the hairs on her neck stand on end. She held her breath as she felt all that invisible magic flow straight toward Brodie, knowing she couldn’t do anything to stop the quartet. The poor shifter who had just rescued her from Devon was now frozen in place, and with four powerful fae behind the spell, there was little Brodie could do.

“What the hell’s going on here?” Dain’s attention bounced between Brodie and Wren. Amazingly, he didn’t recognize her—not at first, anyway. After just a few seconds, he knitted his eyebrows together and strode toward Wren. She tried to hold onto the remnants of the glamour spell she had cast but, once Dain waved a hand to lower her magical barriers, she was done for. “Wren!”

“Well, that’s unexpected,” her cousin Kellen added, running one hand through his flaming red hair. Despite Dain’s fury, Kellen had a slight grin on his face, almost as if he was amused by her presence. “Glad you could join us, cousin.”

“This isn’t funny,” Dain snapped, casting Kellen a murderous glance.

“Lighten up.” Now Radagast was pitching in, both hands in his pockets as he appraised the situation. “Scolding your sister won’t do much right now. Will it? The important thing is getting some answers.” As Rad spoke, he tipped his chin toward Brodie.

“I think our little cousin was having some illicit fun with Mr. Butt-Naked here,” Eldan said although he didn’t seem that amused with his own theory. When he turned to Wren, there was no smile on his face. “I mean, I hope that’s what’s happening here, Wren. Because if this isn’t about fun, and this asshole was trying to do something shady… Well, the four of us are going to have a long conversation with him.”

“W-what are you guys even doing out here?” Wren sputtered, doing her best not to sound shrill but failing miserably. “You were supposed to be at the party, not in the gardens.”

“We just came for a walk with the ladies,” Eldan shrugged although his eyes had returned to Brodie. “We heard some shouting and followed. That’s how we came across…this.” He smirked, waving one hand at the frozen shifter.

Then a group of feminine voices cut through the ensuing silence.

“What’s going on?”

“Dain?”

“What the…?”

Wren narrowed her eyes so she could peer into the shadows. Just a few seconds later she watched as the Oberon women rushed into the scene, awkwardly trying to balance themselves on their heels as their shoes crunched across the frosty grass.
